Welcome for all

Prepare a route that works for you

We aim to make the heritage, landscape and visitor facilities enjoyable for as many people as possible.

The site is fairly flat overall, although visitors will encounter several gentle slopes. Pathways connect the principal areas. Access can vary within historic structures, so reviewing the information below before arrival will help you plan.

Getting around

Mobility access

Pathways provide access around the site, with gentle slopes in some areas. Within the main complex, step-free alternatives are provided wherever practical.

  • Sloped access to buildings where entrances also have steps
  • Lift access to first-floor exhibitions and Chi an Bobel
  • Mobility scooters available to hire, subject to availability
  • Designated accessible parking spaces provided close to accessible facilities

Accessible parking is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Because availability and routes may change, contact the visitor team before travelling if parking proximity is important to your visit.

Listed heritage

Historic building access

Most of the 19-acre site can be reached by visitors using wheelchairs or with mobility impairments. One important exception applies within Robinson’s Engine House.

Please note: the sensitive Grade II listed structure cannot accommodate a lift. Its interior is therefore not accessible to wheelchair users or visitors unable to use stairs. The surrounding site and external views remain part of the wider heritage experience.

Sensory support

Hearing and visual access

Assistance dogs

Assistance dogs on leads are welcome throughout the visitor areas, with the exception of the Adventure Playground.

Hearing loops

Hearing loop systems operate in areas of the site. Ask the visitor team about available locations and support when planning your visit or on arrival.

Visitor facilities

Changing Places toilet

A Changing Places toilet is provided near the designated accessible parking spaces. The facility has room for the user and up to two carers.

  • Height-adjustable, adult-sized changing bench
  • Tracking or mobile hoist provision
  • Additional space for carers and mobility equipment

If this facility is essential to your visit, please confirm its current availability with the visitor team before travelling.

Individual requirements
